چکیده

—Rules of food allocation between nestlings of the black-billed magpie Pica pica, a species showing brood reduction. Aims: The existence of a size hierarchy of nestlings in a brood facilitates a secondary readjustment of brood size to resource availability, through the death of the smaller chicks when food is scarce. A mechanism to facilitate brood reduction would be for parents preferentially to feed the biggest nestlings in the nest. Therefore, feeding rules employed by adults are important because they predetermine the extent of brood reduction when food is scarce. In this study, feeding rules are studied in a species with habitual brood reduction, the black-billed magpie (Pica pica). Location: Hoya de Guadix, southeastern Spain. Methods: Nests were filmed using a micro-camera. Results: Parents preferentially fed the bigger nestlings, and those with higher begging levels, i.e. those which came closer to parents, responded most quickly, had higher begging intensity and adopted a higher posture when begging. Moreover, the preference by parents for the biggest nestlings was independent of the level of begging and the position in the nest. The process of multiple feeding (when more than one nestling was fed during one feeding event) was also analysed, in relation to nestling age and size: such events were more frequent with younger chicks in the nest, and when the first chick fed was relatively small. Conclusions: Results are congruent with the adaptive brood reduction hypothesis.

The Effect of Magpie Breeding Density and Synchrony on Brood Parasitism by Great Spotted Cuckoos

Nesting density and synchrony by hosts may indirectly serve as a defense mechanism against brood parasites. Here we examine the relationships between spatial and temporal distribution of host nests and the probability of being parasitized. We use as host species the Black-billed Magpie (Pica pica), a species that is parasitized by the Great Spotted Cuckoo (Clamator glandark) in southern Europe....

Interactions between a brood parasite and its host in relation to parasitism and immune defence

Nestlings of many brood parasites are reared together with those of their hosts, but still manage to monopolize a disproportionate share of the food delivered by adult hosts. We hypothesized that: (1) the low levels of host-specific pathogens of such brood parasite nestlings provide them with an advantage in competition for limited food; (2) a higher provisioning rate and the resulting better b...

Feather microstructure of the black-billed magpie (Pica pica sericea) and jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos).

The jungle crow (Corvus macrorhynchos) distribution stretches from eastern Eurasia continent to southeastern Asia. The distribution of the black-billed magpie (Pica pica sericea) stretches from Korea and China to the Kyushu area in Japan. They are both in the Family, Corvidae, and have iridescent feather colors, but the iridescent feather color of the black-billed magpie is more remarkable than...

Nest size predicts the effect of food supplementation to magpie nestlings on their immunocompetence: an experimental test of nest size indicating parental ability

Post-mating sexually selected signals are expected to indicate parental quality. The good parent model assumes that expression of the sexual character positively reflects parental ability, resulting in a potential link between the exaggeration of the character and nestling-fitness traits. We tested this prediction in a population of a monogamous passerine, the magpie (Pica pica), for which nest...

Differences in intestinal microbiota between avian brood parasites and their hosts

The intestinal microbiota determines the effectiveness of digestion in vertebrates, and is influenced by the external environment (mainly the diet), gut characteristics, and phylogeny. Avian brood-parasitic nestlings of the sub-family Cuculinae develop in nests of phylogenetically distant passerines and can be fed with the host diet. If the shaping of bacterial communities is dominated by phylo...
